Young Australians are travelling overseas in greater numbers than ever, and many go without ever being taught how to keep themselves safe.

A SHORT FILM, SHOWN AT THE RIGHT MOMENT, CAN CHANGE THAT

Nearly 1 in 4 Australian travellers under 30 had no travel insurance on their most recent overseas trip.

2 in 5 young travellers chose a destination they themselves felt was risky.

Among young travellers who drank alcohol overseas, almost a third drank from bottles with unfamiliar labels, and around 1 in 6 drank from shared jugs or buckets

Thailand is the number one place Australians need emergency help overseas. The Government's 24-hour consular line now answers a call for help roughly every 8 to 9 minutes.

Motorbike and scooter crashes are among the most common ways young Australians are seriously hurt in South East Asia, and insurers will not pay out if you were riding without a helmet or a valid licence. Getting home can cost a family hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Created in honour of lives lost and lessons learned, this educational video equips young people with practical travel safety skills to help them recognise risks, look out for their mates, and make safer choices while travelling and exploring the world.

Why This Matters

In 2012, my sister beautiful Nicole was killed in a motorbike accident in Thailand. She was 24. A gifted dancer, a footy-mad, full-of-life ballerina on the edge of everything she'd dreamed of.

Saving Lives

Nicole would never have ridden a bike at home without a helmet. But overseas, away from everything familiar, she relaxed the standards that would have kept her safe. Because of a reckless driver, that one decision cost her her life, and changed ours forever.

I made this film so that other families never have to learn what mine did.

It carries Nicole's story, and the simple, practical lessons that could have brought her home safely.

What Your Students Will Learn

  • How to plan and prepare for safe overseas travel

  • How to protect themselves in unfamiliar environments and cultures

  • How to minimise harm to themselves and others while travelling

  • How to build resilience and respond well when things to wrong

  • How everyday decisions can carry far bigger consequences abroad

Safe travel sits within the wellbeing and pastoral care programs many schools already run, and aligns with senior PDHPE and the NSW Crossroads syllabus. Most other states and territories have an equivalent senior wellbeing or life-skills program the film fits neatly into.
